Does Your Body Language Match Your Wardrobe?

Does Your Body Language Match Your Wardrobe?

Whether you are out for drinks with the boys or about to sit down to an important business luncheon, your attitude and confidence will show through, regardless of your wardrobe.

Yes, that’s right, your favourite men’s suit won’t hide your body language. If you want to put your best, most confident foot forward, it’s important to pay attention to your body language. Here are some tips.

Be Satisfied with Your Appearance

If you are constantly messing with your clothing or reaching up to touch your hair, it shows you are not satisfied with what you saw in the mirror before you left the house. If you feel self conscious everyone will notice. Fidgeting in any way is unattractive. You can avoid feeling unsure of yourself by keeping up with hair-cuts, shaving, trimming nails, and keeping up with other grooming. You’d be surprised at how these little things make a difference.

Body Language

If you’re freshly groomed and feeling satisfied with your appearance, the next thing to be aware of is your body language. How are you standing? Try not to stand with your back to the room. You’ll feel and look more confident and open to conversation when you are facing the room, standing tall and not crossing your arms across your chest. You want everyone to view you as approachable as well as professional. Your designer men’s clothing can actually make you appear aloof or even snobbish if you don’t combine your slick wardrobe with a winning smile and inviting personality.

Touching?

Knowing how and when to touch others is important. No one wants to feel awkward or uncomfortable, but a light touch on the shoulder to get someone’s attention, the occasional pat on the back for emphasis and a firm handshake will go a long way in projecting a positive attitude.

Your Facial Expressions

Having a poker face does not encourage social interactions. If you are trying to put others at ease and encourage them talk to you, it is important to know what your facial expression is saying. You want people to feel important and engaged so be sure to take the time to listen when they speak, and wait without interrupting before responding. A genuine smile will also draw others to you.

Eye Contact

Looking away gives the impression you are either not trustworthy or just too shy and unsure of yourself. Show others you know what you are talking about by engaging them and drawing them in with your eyes.

Posture

This tip should really go without saying, but your posture is vitally important. Standing straight and tall, yet comfortably, without being rigid will again project an air of confidence yet ease.

Whether you’re wearing a 3 piece suit or your best formal dinner suit, always keep in mind that what’s inside the suit is even more important than the wardrobe itself. Designer men’s clothing can only take you so far, your body language will do the rest.
