In the animal kingdom, an alpha male is the highest ranking animal within a group. He is always given what he wants. He finds a mate first, eats first, and the rest of the animals in his pack know he is superior to them, so they don’t challenge his authority.
When it comes to our culture, we use this term to describe a human version of the animal kingdom’s alpha male. We use it to explain a man’s success. An alpha male in human terms is the man who can part the crowd at the club, obtains the attention of all the ladies, and who takes control at each meeting he attends. He has power and status.
In the animal kingdom, animals obtain their alpha male status through aggression and strength, but these qualities do not always work in our society. Many alpha males do share these characteristics; however, the following virtues are more commonly seen in today’s modern culture.
Characteristics of an Alpha Male
- Assertiveness- Unlike aggression, assertiveness is less likely to raise your blood pressure and cause a heart attack. And, it is more likely to propel you into the status of alpha male. While aggression and assertiveness are often confused, they are two very different things. Assertiveness means you are communicating and acting with confidence, and you aren’t hiding anything. You are a straight-shooter who knows what he wants; you don’t beat around the bush or give in to excuses or manipulation. However, you do this in a way that doesn’t overstep other individual’s boundaries, threaten them, or abuse them.
- The Look- In the animal kingdom, alpha males are typically the most vibrant and beautiful. While they may display a few scars from their years of aggression, their confident appearance sets them apart from the crowd. In our society, looks matter as well. You can spot an alpha male across a crowded room, simply by the men’s clothing he wears. He may don a classic black men’s suit from Brook Taverner and a crisp white button-up shirt. He may call attention to himself and alert you to his status position through various accessories and colours, like a red silk tie and vibrant cufflinks. If you want to be an alpha male, men’s clothing matters. It can set you apart from others and show how confident and powerful you are.
- Respect- As an alpha male, you may have the upper hand when it comes gaining respect from others because of the men’s suits you wear and your assertiveness. To be a true alpha male however, you must be able to show the same respect to others. Being rude gets you nowhere, especially when you are placed in powerful positions. If you show those with less “rank” than you the same respect they give you, they will be more likely continue to respect you and stand by you.
- Risks- Alpha males aren’t afraid to take risks, but more importantly, they understand risk. They examine the pros and cons of making decisions that can not only impact them, but others, and they do their best to manage those risks.
With the right look, the right attitude, and a bit of confidence, you can become a true alpha male. While many turn to aggression to climb their way to the top of the corporate ladder, doing so can result in a toxic environment. Gain the respect you deserve by using assertiveness and quality suits for men.
