When most men think about wearing suits from Brook Taverner, they take the time to consider all of the normal factors. They make sure they are wearing the right accessories, are using the correct colours, aren’t wearing patterns that clash together, and they ensure their men’s suits are the right fit for the best look.
While all of these factors are essential for ensuring you look fantastic in your suits for men, even the best looking ensemble can be ruined by one simple, everyday action: applying your cologne.
Although you might think that applying cologne is easy, and may be wondering exactly how you can do it wrong, believe us, it isn’t and you can. And while that fantastic red tie, crisp French cuff shirt, and black pinstripe suit may catch the eye of everyone in the office, they may be running for the door instead of shaking your hand if your cologne isn’t applied correctly.
Applying Cologne When You Are Wearing Men’s Suits
- Don’t Douse- Have you ever noticed that guy in your office that always seems to be wearing a little too much cologne? Of course you have; it’s hard not to. His cologne lingers in the elevator, announces his entrance into a room, and is simply offensive to the nose. The question is: if he doesn’t notice it, are you sure you would if the same thing was happening to you? To prevent this, let’s get back to the basics. Dousing yourself with half a bottle of cologne is not only wasteful, but it can ruin your appearance before you even enter a room. Instead, dab small portions of the cologne on your pulse points, or behind your ears, on your throat, and on your wrists.
- Avoid Scented Soaps- If you are going to be wearing cologne with your suits for men, try to avoid using scented soaps at the same time. Why? At times, these soaps don’t work well with your cologne. They may overpower your cologne if it is a lighter fragrance or completely alter the smell of your cologne. If you can, use unscented body washes and soaps. If not, try to use body washes and soaps that have a much lighter fragrance than your cologne so you don’t ruin your appearance with an unappealing scent.
- Don’t Just Use One Scent- While finding a signature go-to scent is important, sticking to the same old fragrance can become boring after a while. Also, as the seasons change, your signature scent needs to change too; if you wear a full-bodied cologne with suits for men during the heat of summer, it may be too overwhelming. However, the opposite is true as well. A light scent may be lost during winter months. Choose two or three scents you enjoy so you can change things up as needed.
- Don’t be a Hoarder- Many men make the mistake of stocking up on cologne and saving their bottles for years. Hoarding your cologne can be a big mistake though, and could ruin your appearance easily. Why? Cologne only has a shelf life of three years. After this, the cologne’s natural oils will become less intense and will eventually go rancid. This rule is important to remember, and applies whether you have never opened you bottle of cologne or you are on the last few drops.
Your cologne can play a crucial role in your appearance in men’s suits. By following these simple rules, however, you can ensure your suits are able to attract others instead of pushing them away.
