Steal His Style: John Legend

John Legend not only has a voice that’s velvety smooth, he is also widely known for his sartorial sense. With parents who were part-time tailors, John grew up with a true appreciation for fabric as well as clothing that fit correctly, –which is one of the biggest mistakes we see in fashion today (ill fitting attire).

John Legend did have a head start in the world of fashion. In interviews with GQ magazine, he talks about growing up wearing a three-piece suit to church and dressing formally on several occassions before he was even out of his teen years.

You may not have this kind of head start, but let’s face it, –very few men do. Most don’t know a thing about style and rarely consider it until they’ve reached college or land their first job. That’s why we write these articles for you! So you can make up for lost time and copy the styles of your favourite dapper gentleman.

Steal the Style of John Legend

British men are known for dressing well and John Legend is no exception. He loves wool coats and can regularly be seen in wool, leather, and even velvet jackets. Outerwear is a favourite accessory and John wears everything from v-neck sweaters to stylish trench coats. Since he travels regularly, his coats are often a necessity, but we’re sure he must love the fall and winter weather when he can step out in his wool and leather on a regular basis!

To emulate John’s love for outerwear, take a look at our Grasmere Coat in black, navy, or honey. The Piccadily is another fine choice, –our traditional Donegal Tweed, Italian designed overcoat.

Besides the outerwear, John compliments his 5’9′ frame by wearing darker coloured, slim fitted suits, and especially likes the black-on-black look. Although these choices can help a shorter man look a bit taller, John isn’t worried about his height, and you shouldn’t be either. We regularly see his beautiful lady on his arm, stiletto heels and all. That’s what dressing your best will do for you. You’ll have a confidence that supersedes your height or weight.  Here’s a few more style options we took from this stylish “legend.”

The Accessories

John Legends loves his wardrobe, and he regularly accessorizes with scarves, bow-ties, tie clips and pocket squares. He’s playful with his wardrobe and isn’t afraid to take chances.

Another accessory (that money can’t buy) is his perfectly trimmed hair and beard. Believe it or not, men, –your grooming has more to do with your overall appearance than you may think. We’ve seen so many men who have the right suit, tie, shoes and belt, yet their face is overly scruffy and their hair hasn’t been cut in at least two months. The secret to a clean, crisp look is the perfect combination of grooming and wardrobe.

John’s Fashion Mentor

When John was asked who he likes to follow after, he quickly mentioned Daniel Craig for his perfect balance of “tough guy” roughness and smooth wardrobe (and character as James Bond). We’d have to agree that Daniel is quite the example, but you’re pretty spiffy yourself, John!
